James Anderson and Stuart Broad had a great spell, with Broad removing David Warner in the fourth over for just two runs. Replays suggested Warner was unlucky to be given out, reported Reuters.
Broad struck again in the eighth over to remove Bancroft, who initially looked in good touch after his return from suspension after sandpaper-gate only to be caught in the slips for eight runs.
Usman Khawaja was out next, for 13. However, after an initial shock, Travis Head and Steve Smith steadied the ship to lunch.
