The West Indies folded up for a paltry total of 181 runs in its first innings before lunch on the third day of the first Test against India at Rajkot on Saturday, a day after India piled up a mammoth 649 for 9 (declared). Not unexpectedly, India decided to enforce the follow-on in sight of an innings victory.

After ending day 2 on a wobbly 94 for 6, the West Indies staged a recovery of sorts thanks to an enterprising 73-run partnership between Roston Chase, who top-scored with 53 and Keemo Paul. Paul impressed with his aggression, hitting two sixes while making 47 off 49 balls.

However, like the top order collapse on the second day, the rest of the West Indies lower order showed little fight and caved in meekly.

All five Indian bowlers chipped in with wickets, with Ravichandran Ashwin topping the wickets tally, scalping 4 for 37.The West Indies poor batting effort was highlighted by the fact that of the seven batsmen who reached double figures, five scored less than 20 runs each.
