Rejoice, cinematographers and cinephiles alike, for Sony India just launched the VENICE Extension System Mini, the compact camera extension unit for its flagship VENICE 2 cinema camera.
The tech hardware giant announced the launch in India on January 19 2026. The VENICE series was used on major global productions like Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water, and Sony is positioning the Mini as an extension of that high-end cinema ecosystem rather than a standalone camera.
The VENICE Extension System Mini (model CBK-3621XS) is an accessory for the VENICE 2 that houses the same 8.6K full-frame CMOS sensor in a much smaller "camera head" that connects to the main body via a cable. Sony said that the head is roughly the size of a typical smartphone and about 70 per cent smaller in volume than the existing VENICE Extension System 2, making it suitable for handheld work, cramped sets and high-action rigs such as gimbals, cranes or vehicles.
Mukesh Srivastava, Head of Imaging Business at Sony India, pitched in, "By bringing the power of the VENICE 2 8K sensor into an ultra-compact form factor, we are enabling creators to apture cinematic imagery in environments and scenarios that were previously challenging or impossible."
The system supports both 6K and 8K variants of VENICE 2, and with a future software update, VENICE 2 6K owners will be able to record in 8K using this unit.
Key features for filmmakers
The Extension System Mini includes a drop-in ND cartridge system with nine glass ND filters, including a clear filter, with each density automatically recognised by the VENICE 2 camera. The head unit measures about 63.9 mm × 103.2 mm × 60.2 mm and weighs roughly 0.54 kg with an E-mount, or about 1.05 kg with the PL-mount adapter, keeping it light enough for complex rigs.
It ships with a thinner, more flexible 4.5 m cable that can be detached for rigging, and an optional 12 m cable is available for setups where the camera body needs to sit far away from the lens position.
There are 15 mounting points, support for both E-mount and PL lenses, assignable buttons, and a 3‑pin Fischer output to power or trigger accessories.
For advanced work, multiple Mini heads can be placed side by side with about 64 mm between sensors, approximating the distance between human eyes for stereoscopic 3D, VR arrays or VFX plates.
Sony India said the VENICE Extension System Mini kit (CBK-3621XS) with 4.5m cable and ND Filter Kit (CBK‑ND1K), along with the 12m cable (CBK‑12C3621) and standalone ND Filter Kit, will be available in India from Monday, with pricing to be provided on request to professional buyers.
