WhatsApp is reportedly testing out a new voicemail feature that would let callers leave a voice message if their WhatsApp call goes unanswered—without having to jump back into the chat.
Spotted in the latest Android beta (version 2.25.23.21) as per a WABetaInfo report with screenshots, this feature adds a 'Record voice message' button on the call screen alongside 'Call again' and 'Cancel': an attempt to streamline what is otherwise a multi-tap detour.
"Once recorded, the voice message is sent directly within the conversation, so the recipient can hear it at their convenience. The notification for the missed call also remains, ensuring that users are aware of both the missed call and the voice message," WaBetaInfo said.
While the reasoning behind the possible update seems sound, this imitation of the traditional voicemail has received a few negative responses as well. Some claim that the possible update was unnecessary since it was possible to send voice messages in-text anyway, and that WhatsApp ought to stick to "basic messaging and nothing more", as per a Sun report.

This possible update follows tests by WhatsApp on a call reminder tool, designed to notify users of calls they had missed, instead of simply showing up as a notification in the 'Calls' section of the application.

This hints at the fact that Meta's plans for WhatsApp may involve not only improving voice and video call experience, but also taking on some attributes of applications that exclusively deal with call logs and identification applications, such as Truecaller and native phone applications.
