While Israel claimed the deployment was a deterrent exercise, analysts noted the flight path matched previous attack routes targeting Iranian facilities. Dozens of Israeli fighter jets and refuelling aircraft reportedly flew toward the Iranian border earlier this week in a major move amid reports that the US and Israel have drawn up plans for renewed military strikes on Iran after the American midterm elections on November 3.

While Israel claims the deployment was a military exercise and a show of force aimed at deterring Iran from attacking ahead of Israeli elections scheduled for next week, analysts point out the flight path over Syria and Iraq was the same as the one the Israel Defence Forces took during its attack on Iran.

The sortie was carried out after informing Washington, and the aircraft turned around shortly before reaching Iranian territory and returned to Israel, according to an Axios report.

Reports hint that this could be part of the military drills being carried out by the US and Israel ahead of “a short but intensive operation,” including flyovers of Iran’s western neighbour Iraq to simulate strike manoeuvres. The joint attack could target Iranian energy sites, nuclear facilities, as well as Iran’s arsenals of missiles and drones.

At the same time, American officials noted that they were under the impression that behind the exercise was a quiet Israeli hope that the Iranian Air Force or its anti-aircraft systems would respond by firing at the Israeli planes, which would have given Jerusalem an immediate pretext and international justification for carrying out a large-scale attack on Iranian territory.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards are also preparing, with reports stating they have deployed large numbers of forces and military equipment, including heavy and medium weapons, to several areas of Iran’s Kurdistan region. Hundreds of IRGC special forces have been deployed in recent weeks around villages on the slopes of the Shaho Mountains and have set up ambush positions after arriving.

According to the report, those forces took part in artillery shelling and drone attacks last week in the mountainous areas of Shaho and Marivan.

There are other signs that Iran could be preparing. Mehdi Mohammadi, an adviser to Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said signs of a potential military confrontation between Iran and Israel have intensified and warned that the two sides are moving closer to a “zero hour.”

“The signs of military confrontation, particularly between Iran and the Israeli regime, have noticeably intensified,” Mohammadi wrote on his Telegram channel Wednesday. He also pointed to what he described as increased enemy flights over Iraq, movements in occupied territories, and military preparations designed to provide maximum flexibility for different scenarios. “The enemy has moved closer to ‘zero hour,’” he wrote.
