The United States is considering a significant military reinforcement in the Middle East, with plans to deploy an additional 20,000 troops and 150 fighter jets. As part of this strategic move, the US Navy is being asked to deploy at least three aircraft carriers to enhance protection for maritime movements and bolster defenses against potential Iranian missile strikes. This buildup aims to secure US assets and allies in the region and underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions. The report highlights the involvement of Nimitz-class carriers, such as the USS George Washington, USS George H.W. Bush, and USS Theodore Roosevelt, which are known for their formidable capabilities and extensive air wings.

The United States may soon send 20,000 additional troops, 150 fighter jets, and numerous destroyers to the Middle East, a new report said. As part of ensuring the protection of vessel movements in the region, the US Navy will be asked to deploy at least three aircraft carriers, the report added.

With further troop deployment, the United States wants to provide its assets and allies with improved protection from Iranian missile strikes. The USS George Washington, the USS George H.W. Bush, and the USS Theodore Roosevelt are among the carriers involved in the discussions, the Wall Street Journal reportedly said in a report.

Around 50,000 US troops are currently deployed in the Middle East, and talk of additional deployments comes not long after President Donald Trump spoke about "possible" ramped-up bombing against Tehran after the midterm polls.

USS George H.W. Bush: What makes the Nimitz-class carrier powerful?

A Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), was built by Northrop Grumman in Virginia. According to available information, each Nimitz-class carrier can embark up to 90 aircraft and operate with a virtually unlimited range, "providing unmatched air superiority and strike capability worldwide."

According to a report, the ship is 332.9 m in length and has a full-load displacement of 102,000 t with stores, ammunition, fuel, and water. The ship carries a crew of over 6,000. There are 3,200 ship crew with 160 officers and 2,500 aircrew. The ship also accommodates the carrier battle group’s flag officer and about 70 flag crew.

Its flight deck is 332.9 m long and 76.8 m wide. It typically carries up to 56 fixed-wing aircraft including the Hornet (F/A-18A, C, E, and F), the Grumman EA-6B Prowler, and the Grumman E-2C Hawkeye, and up to 15 helicopters (Sikorsky SH-60F, HH-60H Seahawk, and SH-60B Seahawks). It can launch aircraft at a rate of one every 20 seconds.

"The ship is armed with two or three Raytheon GMLS Mk 29 octuple missile launchers for the NATO Sea Sparrow or Evolved Sea Sparrow missiles and two Mk 49 guided-missile launch systems for the RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM). The aircraft carrier is also fitted with four 20 mm Phalanx CIWSs (close-in weapon system)," a report on the website Naval Technology said.

USS George Washington

Another Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the USS George Washington (CVN 73), is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier that is currently entrusted with the responsibility of maritime security operations aimed at intercepting potential threats to merchant shipping and thwarting piracy and terrorism-linked threats. First commissioned in 1992, the USS George Washington underwent a six-year-long Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) starting in 2017, reports showed.

USS Theodore Roosevelt

The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), meanwhile, carries Carrier Air Wing 11, with F-35C stealth fighters, F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, EA-18G Growler electronic attack jets, E-2D Hawkeye early-warning aircraft, MH-60R/S helicopters, and CMV-22B Ospreys. As per available information, its sailors were told to plan for at least eight months away from home as they set sail for the Middle East.

Nimitz-class carriers: Weapon systems

It needs to be noted that Nimitz-class aircraft carriers were the largest warships ever built until the commissioning of the USS Gerald R. Ford in 2017. These carriers are reportedly armed with the Raytheon RAM (Rolling Airframe Missile) system, which provides short-range defence against incoming anti-ship missiles.

The nuclear-powered carriers reportedly have two General Electric pressurised water reactors driving four turbines of 260,000 hp (194 MW) and four shafts. There are four emergency diesel generators of 10,720 hp (8 MW). They come with Raytheon AN/SLQ-32(V) electronic warfare systems that can detect hostile radar emissions via two sets of antennae. The system analyses pulse repetition rate, scan mode, scan period, and frequency, which can be useful in thwarting Tehran's ballistic missiles.

The development comes amidst US President Donald Trump's top cabinet members met secretly at the presidential retreat at Camp David to discuss next steps in the Iran war and the Saudi-Houthi conflict in Yemen, Axios reported on Friday. According to Reuters, Vice President Vance chaired the meeting, the news outlet reported, citing people familiar with the matter
