Smit Machchhar, the hero of the flydubai flight FZ1073, has been airlifted to Dubai for better treatment.
This comes barely a day after he was stabbed by his Omani co-pilot, fought back inside the cockpit on Wednesday, and still managed to get the cockpit door open—all while the flight was rapidly losing altitude.
A team of off-duty Israeli pilots, who had been passengers aboard the flight, then managed to land it safely after the other passengers subdued him.
Despite the serious injuries he suffered from his co-pilot allegedly using the cockpit's crash axe (also called a fire axe) to attack him, his health has been described as stable.
The Indian pilot and flight captain was earlier treated at Saudi Arabia's Tabuk, where the Israel-bound flight had made an emergency landing after the mid-air scare.
On hearing the news, his parents had flown to Dubai, and then Saudi Arabia, in order to meet him in person after the harrowing incident.
“He was being operated on, now the operation is completed ... But the authorities there are still not letting the parents meet due to protocols and security reasons," BJP MLA Parag Shah told ThePrint earlier on Thursday.
The Indian Embassy in UAE later wrote on X that Deepak Mittal, New Delhi's Ambassador to the UAE, and Consul General Dr. E. Vishnu Vardhan Reddy had met with Smit Machchhar's family in Dubai, and had "assured them of all support and assistance from the Indian government".
"They briefed the family about Captain Machchhar’s health & recovery, conveyed that the Embassy & Consulate are in touch with the UAE authorities, and assured the family of continued support," it added on X.
