Iranian lawmakers are reportedly planning to remove Foreign  Minister Abbas Araghchi and have moved an impeachment motion against him in Parliament, according to reports. This comes after Araghchi met US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner allegedly without approval from the Iranian Supreme National Security Council.

“Members of parliament have registered the impeachment of Araghchi and are pursuing it,” Ali Khezrian, a member of parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said.

A report that appeared in Iranian Tasnim News Agency claimed Araghchi’s interaction with Witkoff was carried out without coordination and approval from policy-making and responsible bodies in this field (including the Supreme National Security Council).

“Certain claims that this action was coordinated are untrue. Araqchi must be held accountable to the relevant bodies and the people of Iran for this wrong action, which contradicts national interests, and explain by what calculation he made this great mistake,” the report added.

The secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, said in a television interview that the intention was to re-transmit to the mediators the seven conditions set by Iran. According to Tasnim, his words indirectly indicate that permission was not given to deviate from this and have direct contact with Witkoff.

Araqchi met in New York at the UN building with President Trump's envoys, Witkoff and Kushner, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan. Two Iranian officials told the New York Times about the meeting, and Trump later updated them on it, as well as in the official Iranian media.

Iranian media claimed that the meeting took place at the request of American representatives, during which Araqchi presented Tehran's conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war.

Trump himself referred to the meeting, saying that it was "very good."

Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent questioned how Iran's delegation to the UN General Assembly in New York would return home amid Washington's sanctions targeting Tehran's airline operations. "In terms of Operation Economic Outcast, we are squeezing the Iranians as they've never seen today," he said, adding that the campaign was affecting Iran's international air links. Bessent claimed that over 80 to 90 per cent of external flights from Iran had been shut down.™
