The United States has issued a fresh warning to foreign companies, airports, and fuel suppliers, threatening severe secondary sanctions if they continue to provide support or services to Iranian airlines.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced on Monday that all Iranian carriers could be effectively shut out of international travel starting Wednesday.
The directive follows a series of aggressive measures earlier this month that placed 27 Iranian airlines and remaining aviation entities onto the US sanctions list.
The restrictions prohibit foreign entities from providing aviation fuel, landing and ground services, or ticketing support.
“If they land, you cannot provide them with fuel, you cannot provide them with landing services, you cannot sell them tickets, or you will be knocked out of the dollar system,” Bessent was quoted as saying by CNBC.
The move is part of the Trump administration's broader campaign to intensify economic pressure on Tehran. Treasury officials have vowed to aggressively target Iran's key economic sectors, including energy, shipping, technology, gold, and digital assets.
Bessent had previously vowed the United States would declare "economic D-Day" on Iran and pledged to choke off Tehran financially.
The escalating economic warfare comes amid the ongoing military conflict that erupted in late February, when a joint US-Israeli airstrike killed Iran's supreme leader and several senior military officials.
In retaliation, Tehran blocked the Strait of Hormuz—a vital global energy transit route—causing oil prices to surge and prompting the US to respond with a naval blockade and heightened financial containment measures.
