After a month-long lull in direct military action, the US struck two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island on Sunday, prompting a swift retaliation from Tehran, which targeted two US military bases in Jordan.
The US strikes targeted the strategically important island near the northern edge of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Fox News, US officials said the operation was carried out after American forces observed Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) preparing to launch rockets and deploy sea mines in the vital waterway.
Iran's state broadcaster, Press TV, reported that several people, including civilians and IRGC personnel, were killed or wounded in the US attack.
Tehran condemned the strikes as a "grave blunder" and vowed retaliation, accusing Washington of escalating its military campaign alongside newly imposed economic measures.
"This action was a strategic and fatal error by the Trump regime in the course of the economic war, an error that will shift the balance against its planners and will entail heavy costs," IRGC spokesman and public relations chief Hossein Mohebbi said.
"The enemy will pay the consequences of this miscalculation in both the economic and military arenas," he added.
Shortly after his statement, Iran launched ballistic missiles toward two US military bases in Jordan. Press TV reported that the missiles targeted technical and maintenance facilities as well as fighter-jet positions at King Hussein and Al-Azraq air bases.
Jordanian air defences have intercepted most of the incoming missiles, according to initial reports.
The latest exchange marks the first direct escalation between the two sides in nearly a month. The war that began in February reached a stalemate in recent weeks with Washington threatening to impose costly sanctions on countries that support Iran.
