Soon after Iran's Revolutionary Guards spokesperson told Tasnim news agency that Tehran and Muscat have reached an agreement on their share of the Strait of Hormuz and its revenues, a senior Iranian source quoted by Reuters said a deal is yet to be finalised.

According to the IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi quoted by Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, the US was obstructing negotiations between Oman and Iran, because of which the final agreement is getting delayed.

"The Strait of Hormuz belongs to Iran and the country of Oman... We have been in negotiations with Oman for about a month, and we have reached results that are acceptable to both sides," Mohebbi said. "In these negotiations, agreements have been reached regarding the share of each country in the waters of the Strait and the share of Iran and Oman in its revenues."

The IRGC representative said the strait will remain closed if the US does not accept their conditions.

"If the United States stops obstructing and returns to the agreement, we can open the Strait of Hormuz within the framework of the agreement reached... If the United States does not accept our conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened under any circumstances," Mohebbi said.

Both countries are still working on details of the agreement, Reuters quoted a senior Iranian source as saying.

The contradicting claims from Iranian officials come as Iran and Oman have been holding on-and-off talks for weeks.
