The appointment comes at a time when the Middle East crisis has led to deaths of Indian seafarers and hike in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG.

Who is Vishwesh Negi?

Vishwesh Negi is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 2002 batch. He is currently serving as a Joint Secretary within the Ministry of External Affairs.

"Vishwesh Negi, presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Islamic Republic of Iran," the MEA said in a statement.

This comes days after External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar dialled his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi to strongly urge Tehran to avoid attacks on commercial shipping and seafarers under any circumstances.

"India condemns any such attack by any party," Jaishankar posted on social media. "India is always supportive of dialogue and diplomacy."

A response by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh in Rajya Sabha last week revealed that 16 Indians, including 10 seafarers, were killed in the Middle East during the conflict since February 28. Eight of them were killed in Oman, four in the UAE, two in Kuwait and one each in Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

Seventy-five others were also injured, including 32 in the UAE, 24 in Oman, 13 in Kuwait, four in Qatar and one each in Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump claimed that talks with Tehran will start on Monday, declaring that he is holding off on new strikes he had previously threatened to unleash on Iran.
