Kuwait Airways is rescheduling the majority of its commercial flights after an Iranian drone attack caused the closure of Kuwait's airspace and damaged a power generation and water desalination plant. The Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy confirmed the attack on the facility, which led to precautionary shutdowns and a call for citizens to conserve electricity. The Kuwaiti army is actively engaged in responding to hostile missile and drone threats, indicating a significant escalation in regional tensions.

A second power generation and water desalination plant in Kuwait was on fire on Saturday morning after an Iranian attack, according to Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, water and renewable energy.

Following the attack, Kuwait Airways announced that it was rescheduling a majority of its commercial flights after a temporary suspension of take-off and landing operations at Kuwait International Airport.

In a press statement, the national airways urged all passengers to closely monitor their flight status.

It noted that automated updates and text messages are being sent to the phone numbers registered within booking files to inform travellers of all timely changes.

Passengers seeking information can contact the customer service centre from within Kuwait at 171, or from abroad at (+965) 24345555 ext. 171, as well as via the dedicated WhatsApp service at (+965) 1802050.

In a statement made on its official channels, Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said that another power generation and water desalination station was struck in a hostile attack, causing a fire to break out in one of the plant's components.

The ministry said that it took a number of generation units offline as a precautionary measure to preserve the safety of the facility and the workers and maintain the stability of the electrical grid.

The ministry said that its emergency response teams were coordinating with the General Fire Force and relevant authorities to handle the fire.

It also called on citizens and residents to cooperate during the “exceptional phase by rationalising electricity consumption, particularly during peak hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., saying this would help ease the load on the electrical grid. It would also help support the technical teams as they complete repair work to restore operational readiness.

The Kuwaiti army issued a notice on Saturday morning saying that the its air defence forces were  "currently responding to hostile missile and drone threats" launched by Iran.

The regional tension escalated in recent days over the Strait of Hormuz, where both sides, the US, Israel and Iran, exchanged attacks.
