US launches more strikes on Iran as Strait of Hormuz tensions rise
Iranian media claimed a telecommunications official was killed and two others were injured in a US strike on Farur Island
US forces conducted new strikes against Iran on Sunday evening, targeting Iranian military facilities including missile and drone infrastructure, surveillance systems, and naval assets, as stated by CENTCOM, in response to an earlier Iranian attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz that resulted in a missing crew member, with Iranian media reporting casualties and damage to several locations including Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, and Bushehr; these escalated tensions come as the US and Iran are nearing the midpoint of a 60-day interim agreement for peace negotiations, with the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global energy shipments, becoming a focal point of contention that jeopardizes the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

US forces carried out fresh strikes on Iran on Sunday evening, escalating tensions in West Asia and pushing the already fragile ceasefire to the brink of collapse. Iran retaliated, targeting the US bases across the Middle East.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the latest operation was aimed at further degrading Tehran's ability to target civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
"At 5 p.m. ET today, U.S. Central Command forces began launching more strikes against Iran to continue degrading their ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The Commander in Chief has directed the strikes to hold Iranian forces accountable," CENTCOM said in a statement.
According to CENTCOM, the strikes targeted multiple Iranian military facilities, including missile and drone infrastructure, coastal surveillance systems, and naval assets.
The latest operation came after an Iranian attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the weekend, which set the vessel ablaze and left one crew member missing.
According to Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency, a telecommunications official was killed and two others were injured in a US strike on Farur Island.
Iranian media reported that the attacks also struck areas including Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, and several islands in the Persian Gulf. The state-run IRNA news agency quoted Hossein Amir Teymouri, governor of Qeshm township, as saying that 10 to 11 enemy projectiles had hit Qeshm Island since Sunday afternoon.
Iran retaliated, targeting the US bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman. Missile alert sirens sounded at dawn Monday in Bahrain, home to the US Navy's 5th Fleet. There was no immediate word on damage.
Earlier on Sunday, the US military said it had completed a third round of strikes against Iran this week. CENTCOM said approximately 140 Iranian military targets were hit on Saturday.
A US official said several of the strikes targeted missile and air defence systems, as well as boats operated by Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
The renewed hostilities come as Iran and the United States approach the midpoint of a 60-day interim agreement aimed at negotiating a permanent end to the conflict. The Strait of Hormuz—a vital corridor for global oil and natural gas shipments and widely regarded as an international waterway—has emerged as a major point of contention, placing the future of the negotiations in jeopardy.
