Iran on Friday mocked the Donald Trump administration for sacking a number of US military officials amid the war in the Gulf, calling the situation a "regime change".

"The regime change happened successfully. MAGA," read a post from the Iranian Embassy in South Africa, which also posted photos of the army officials, drawing on those who have been let go.

This cheeky jibe at Washington's own calls for regime change in Iran comes after the Pentagon fired US Army Chief of Staff General Randy George—who has more than a year left in his term—by means of an early retirement.

Gen Randy George “will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately,” said Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s top spokesman, as per an Associated Press report.

Gen George has held the US Army's top post—which typically runs for four years—since August 2023 under the Biden administration.

The exit of George is the latest move in the rejig at the Pentagon since the arrival of defence secretary Pete Hegseth, under whose tenure the Pentagon itself was renamed the 'Department of War', with Hegseth's title following suit.

However, as in the case of the others, no reason has been cited for his exit, as the war between Iran and US-Israel forces goes well past one month, with Trump not offering a clear exit timeline.

The report added that Hegseth has also ousted Army General David Hodne, who led its Transformation and Training Command, and Army Major General William Green, who headed the Chaplain Corps, citing a Pentagon official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive leadership rejig.
