Amidst the mayhem and confusion of what is being called a terrorist attack in the West Bank, Israel Defence Force (IDF) personnel opened fire on one of their own, who then got run over by the attacker, Jewish media reports said.
It was Staff Sgt. Inbar Avraham Kav who got hit by friendly fire when a Palestinian man drove his pickup truck towards Israeli soldiers in Jit Junction of the West Bank. As the man sped the vehicle towards them, the soldiers opened fire, hitting Staff Sgt. Inbar as well as the driver. The 20-year-old ended up falling under the vehicle before the attacker was neutralised, media reports said. IDF suffered no other casualties in the incident that took place at the place located between Nablus and Kalkilya in the northern West Bank.
Staff Sgt. Inbar Avraham Kav was attached to the Paratroopers Brigade’s 890th Battalion, Jerusalem Post said. He hailed from Lotem, a village in northern Israel.
An IDF investigation confirmed that the slain soldier was hit by bullets during the crossfire, reports said.
The incident comes at a time when the U.S. and Israel are said to be very close to an agreement on Donald Trump's plan to end the war in Gaza after talks between special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Axios reporter Barak Ravid said in a post on social media website X on Sunday, citing a senior U.S. official. The official added that Hamas still needs to agree, Ravid said in the post. Earlier in the day, Trump said he hopes to finalise a Gaza peace plan proposal in a meeting on Monday with Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu.
