Qatar's Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, who is the sister of the ruling emir, is promoting the New York City mayoral bid of Zohran Mamdani, according to a report. What's surprising is that the princess had bankrolled the films of Mamdani's mother Mira Nair since at least 2009.
Sheikha Al-Mayassa has been sharing posts on Mamdani's NYC mayoral run since June, reports New York Post. She has posted news about Mamdani leading in the poll surveys and also reacted to a TikTok video of Mamdani embracing his mother with fire emojis.
Who is Sheikha Al-Mayassa?
Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani is the daughter of Qatar’s former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and the sister of the current emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Sheikha Al-Mayassa completed her bachelors in political science and literature from Duke University in 2005. The princess is married to her second cousin, Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al Thani and they share fours son and one daughter.
Talking about Mira Nairs ties with Qatar royals, Danielle Pletka, a foreign policy expert at the American Enterprise Institute think tank told NY Post that "they are buying somebody who is willing to be bought and at the time of their choosing they will ask for what they want."
She claimed that Qatar is looking at a rainbow coalition that will back various ideologies, including Islamism, antisemitism or anti-Israel.
