Welcome to episode 27 of Port Report from THE WEEK, with the latest updates from the world of ports for the week of August 8-14.
The Haldia Dock Complex of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata set a new record in container vessel interchange, handling 2,612 TEUs of cargo from the Hong Kong-flagged SITC Cagayan.
Next, the V.O. Chidambaranar Port tripled its growth in potassium sulphate cargo handling during April-July in FY 2026-27, as compared to the same period last fiscal.
Moving on, the Kollam Port is all set to receive ₹7.24 crore from the Union government as a part of the push to revamp one of Kerala’s largest ports.

Funded under the shipping ministry’s flagship Sagarmala Programme for port-led development, this ₹7.24 crore grant will provide a boost to the Kerala government's ₹15.15 crore project to develop the minor port under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
Specifically, the project involves the development of a multi-purpose berth, as a part of which the Centre's funds will be used for the construction of ancillary facilities, such as a wharf.
Next, crew change infrastructure at the Vizhinjam Port is all set to receive an upgrade, which includes a seafarers' lounge with added space, in addition to a facilitation centre.

This will be handled by the Kerala Maritime Board, which takes care of non-major port operations at Vizhinjam, as crew change operations resume at the port.
This comes after Centre recently scrapped immigration procedures for sign-on, sign-off, and shore leave passes for Indian-origin seafarers aboard vessels on coastal routes carrying the Indian flag.
Finally, the Indian Ports Association (or IPA), which represents all the country's major ports, made a significant donation of ₹5 crore to aid flood relief efforts in Assam.

Union shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal lauded it as a major move to help rescue and relief operations in a state that has seen about 101 deaths in this year's devastating floods.
