The Indian Coast Guard reported that 24 Indian crew members were safely rescued from the Palau-flagged merchant tanker MT Marivex after it was attacked by a missile off the coast of Oman on June 8. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai initiated the rescue operation after receiving an alert from a crew member's relative, and swiftly coordinated with Omani authorities. The Oman Maritime Search and Rescue Centre took charge of the search mission, deploying rescue helicopters that successfully evacuated all crew members by approximately 5 pm the same day, underscoring successful international maritime cooperation.

Twenty-four Indian crew members were rescued following a missile attack on a Palau-flagged merchant tanker off the coast of Oman, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said on Tuesday.

The rescue operation was launched after the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai received information about the attack on MT Marivex on June 8 at 2:20 pm. All crew members aboard the vessel, which was anchored off Masirah, were Indian nationals.

According to the ICG, the initial alert was relayed to MRCC by a relative of one of the crew members. The centre quickly coordinated with Omani authorities to facilitate the rescue.

“Recognising the gravity of the situation and the immediate threat to the safety of the crew, MRCC Mumbai promptly established communication with the Oman Maritime Search and Rescue Centre (OMSC), Oman, and requested OMSC to assume the duties of Search Mission Coordinator (SMC) and render urgent assistance to the vessel and its crew,” the Coast Guard said.

OMSC responded swiftly, diverting a nearby vessel and deploying two rescue helicopters to the area. Meanwhile, MRCC maintained continuous coordination with OMSC and other stakeholders throughout the operation to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of the crew.

By around 5 pm the same day, OMSC confirmed that all 24 Indian crew members had been safely rescued by Oman Navy helicopters. The tanker remains anchored off Masirah.

“The successful rescue operation highlights the effectiveness of international maritime cooperation and the strong coordination mechanisms established between maritime rescue authorities in the region,” the ICG said.
