The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) on Friday said it had signed 28 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 1.27 lakh crore with major domestic and international firms in the green energy sector.
This is a major boost for the Tuticorin-based port's transformation into a major clean energy hub, in line with India's sustainable maritime goals under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
This contributed to the VOCPA winning the ‘Green Visionary’ Award during an awards ceremony of the India Maritime Week 2025 (IMW 2025), in recognition of its decarbonisation initiatives and "leadership in pursuing the most expeditious path to sustainability enhancements among India’s ports", the port authority said on X.
The largest of the 28 MoUs, in terms of value, were signed with Green Infra Renewable Energy Farms Private Limited (GIREFPL), ACME Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Private Limited, and CGS Energy Private Limited.
The first agreement—and the largest of the 28 MoUs—with GIREFPL, a subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries, is worth Rs 25,400 crore, and involves the development of a common storage and tanking facility for green ammonia (and other hydrogen derivatives) in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin.
The next largest MoU, signed with ACME Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Private Limited, involves a 1,200 Metric Tonnes Per Day (MTPD) green ammonia project valued at Rs 12,000 crore.
The third largest MoU was signed with CGS Energy Private Limited for a 300 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) green ammonia production facility, worth Rs 5,000 crore.
These three pacts alone make up approximately Rs 42,000 crore out of the total investment of Rs 1.27 lakh crore.
"These agreements focus on port-led industrialisation, green hydrogen and green fuels, as well as advancing the use of artificial intelligence in our port operations," explained VOCPA Chairman Susanta Kumar Purohit.
"We anticipate substantial inflows of investment and the generation of many new jobs as a result. We are working extremely hard to build VOC Port into a port of the future, with green energy initiatives and the development of an outer harbour," he added.
