In a horrifying incident, police arrested a man from the South Dinajpur district after he reportedly entered a West Bengal temple with his wife’s severed head on Wednesday.

Locals found the man sitting in the temple premises at 7 am with her head in his hand.

A large police force from Gangarampur police station arrived at the spot and arrested the man.

A sharp object was also recovered.

According to police, the incident occurred in the Mucipal ward No.4 of the district's Gangaparampur town. Locals told officers that the couple had a quarrel.

The arrested man was identified as 46-year-old Rintu Sarkar, a former bus conductor for the state-owned North Bengal State Transport Corporation.

Police said that he was sacked three years ago on disciplinary grounds.

The victim's body, identified as 42-year-old Seema Ghosh Sarkar, was taken for a post-mortem examination while police searched for the murder weapon.

"I became a psycho after they sacked me," Rintu Sarkar told the local media

The couple has two minor children. They were married for 15 years. Since he lost his job, he had been selling flowers and other items like jaggery.

A district police officer said that Sarkar murdered his wife in the early hours of Wednesday and went to the temple with her head.

He reportedly took his two minor sons to the temple as well, but locals took the children away.

“The investigation has just started. So far, we have come to know that Rintu Sarkar became a very short-tempered and irritable person after losing his job. His neighbours claimed that he was arrested twice earlier for getting into trouble with local people. These are being verified," the officer added.
