The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other central agencies have brought back Sourabh Chandrakar to India months after his arrest in July, in connection with a ₹6,000-crore money laundering scam.
Chandrakar is one of the co-founders of the Mahadev App illegal betting empire, alongside Ravi Uppal, who had been detained by the Royal Oman Police, following an Interpol Red Corner Notice issued against him.
He is wanted in two CBI cases, in which chargesheets have already been filed, and in one ED case, in which a prosecution complaint has been filed, the CBI said, months after it declared Mahadev App one of the largest betting app syndicates in India.
A CBI team specially deputed to Oman has escorted him back to India after the request to extradite him was approved. He will now undergo a medical examination and be taken to Raipur after securing transit remand.
He will then be produced before the CBI Special Judge in Raipur on Monday, the investigative agency said.
What are the charges against him?
Chandrakar is accused of masterminding the syndicate's illegal betting on cricket, football, card games and other events, while also routing the proceeds via mule bank accounts, multiple transactions and hawala channels.
Investigators had also found that a part of this money was also allegedly used to pay protection money to public servants.
Uppal, dubbed as another mastermind in the Mahadev App scam, had fled to the UAE alongside Chandrakar in 2019. A few years later, India tried to extradite Chandrakar after his brief house arrest in October 2024, but to no avail.
Just a year later, Uppal resurfaced in the UAE in November 2025, but after Emirati authorities decided to close extradition proceedings against him, he went missing again.
The Mahadev betting app scam again returned to the spotlight in July this year, when the CBI filed a chargesheet against six more accused, as well as additional evidence against Uppal and Chandrakar.
These six were identified as Ashim Das, Rohit Gulati, Vikas Chhaparia, Anil Dhammani, Vishal Ahuja, and Dheeraj Ahuja. They were accused of offences including cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy under the IPC.
“Red Corner Notices have already been issued against four main accused persons who have gone abroad. Action to get them declared as Fugitive Economic Offenders has also been initiated. Further investigation is continuing to unearth the full spread of this syndicate as well as its political and bureaucratic patronage and to bring all other accused persons involved to justice. More chargesheets will be filed in future,” the CBI said in a statement at the time, as per an Indian Express report.
