Is Annamalai revamping strategy to enter Tamil Nadu politics via upcoming civic polls?
By testing his political strength in local civic polls before formally launching a political party, Annamalai aims to establish a foothold against established players and actor Vijay’s TVK
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has launched a new political movement called We The Leaders and plans to contest the upcoming local body elections, signaling his imminent return to active politics and setting the stage for a competitive electoral battle against rivals like actor Vijay.

Former IPS officer and ex-Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai on Wednesday reiterated his political stance when he launched a sharp attack against the Centre over the detention of CJP protesters. His firm reminder that he snapped all ties with the party and his unusually harsh criticism of the government hint that it won’t be long before Annamalai makes his renewed political entry.
Annamalai, under whom the BJP in Tamil Nadu emerged as a political force, growing its vote share to 11 per cent without alliance partners, quit the party in June. He then went on to launch an independent grassroots political movement called "We The Leaders". Within 24 hours, 1.4 million people had registered for his new political venture, and within three days, the number hit 1.7 million.
Though Annamalai had stated that his political movement would evolve and contest the next Assembly elections, he seems to have revamped his plan. He has announced that “We The Leaders” will enter the field with a master plan in the local body elections. Tamil Nadu local body and civic polls are expected to be held after March 2027 following ongoing delimitation, merger, and reorganization.
Political pundits believe that Annamalai decided to hasten the launch of his political party, seeing the void in the current political scenario in the state. “We certainly will launch a political party. We are clear about contesting the local elections and bringing about fundamental changes. We can even contest the local elections as a movement,” he said.
Many believe Annamalai has decided to tread the path of Vijay by contesting the civic body elections first. Before actor Vijay entered politics, his people's movement contested the local elections and demonstrated its strength. The winning executives of that election later met with Vijay, and the photos of the meeting garnered attention.
The former BJP leader may take the local body elections as a test dose. He could expand the political structure of his organisation after assessing the performance of his candidates. Expectations are also high as to what kind of political impact his organisation will have and how much the political landscape of Tamil Nadu will change when a new political party is formed.
While Annamalai’s growth in the BJP owed a lot to the void created by Jayalalithaa and other senior leaders in the AIADMK, things won't be the same as before. He will now have to fight Vijay’s TVK, which has emerged victorious, to grab power in the state. This won’t be an easy feat.
Add to that the potential entry of Dhanush into politics. While the actor is yet to comment on the same, chatter is that he could even join the AIADMK or launch a party of his own.
