Schools in several districts of Tamil Nadu remain closed on Thursday, as heavy rainfall is forecast across parts of the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of very heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning in several districts.
According to media reports, collectors of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari and Tirupattur districts have declared school holidays following heavy overnight rain. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Chennai data shows that several districts received moderate to heavy rainfall till 6:00am on Thursday.
Several parts of central and south Chennai were waterlogged yesterday after the city received rainfall averaging 7 cm the previous day. Reports indicate that stormwater drains were blocked and houses in low-lying neighbourhoods were flooded.
“Moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning is likely to occur in some areas,” said the IMD forecast for Chennai on Thursday.
However, schools in Chennai will reopen on October 22 after a rain holiday. Schools in other districts, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu, will also reopen today. MGR Nagar received the highest rainfall of 15cm.
Mamallapuram received 9cm of rain, while Tenkasi and Sattankulam in Thoothukudi district received 6 cm each. Tirunelveli, Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur recorded only 5 cm each.
The IMD has forecast further rain in the coming days as an upper-air cyclonic circulation is active over the Southwest Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast. A low-pressure area in the same region was the cause of severe rain in the past few days. Thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching speeds of up to 40-50 kmph have also been predicted for certain isolated areas. Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai districts & Karaikal are to be affected the most.
An orange warning has been issued for the southern districts, where rainfall could reach close to 20cm in some areas. Though the IMD has issued only yellow warnings for northern districts, heavy rain and thunderstorms are still expected in the area.
