A 33-year-old IT engineer in Maharashtra's Pune died by suicide after alleging that her in-laws harassed her over dowry.

Police have not registered a case against her husband and his family members.

The woman, Trishana Rahul Sakpal, married Rahul Sakpal in 2018, according to the police complaint filed by her father, Balkrishna Nilkam.

Nilkam, in his complaint, alleged that his daughter was under pressure since her marriage to hand over her entire salary to her in-laws, transfer her parental home to her mother-in-law, and purchase a flat worth Rs 1 crore for her father-in-law, NDTV reported.

She had returned to her parents' home in 2021 after being distressed by physical abuse. Her husband later filed for divorce to get remarried, and the case was pending in court.

She died by suicide at her home on September 29.

In her suicide note, she said that her husband, mother-in-law Vaishali, father-in-law Sanjay, sister-in-law Shaili and paternal grandmother-in-law Shakuntala Salunker were responsible for her death. An FIR was registered against the five based on her father's complaint.

In a separate case, a 23-year-old IT employee in Pune died by suicide last month after dowry harassment allegations. Vaishnavi Praveen’s family said that her husband, Omkar Sanjaay Ghisare and in-laws had demanded an additional Rs 5 lakh for a car after her family already spent Rs 45 lakh for her wedding and gifted her 116 grams of gold.

Vaishnavi had called her mother on the night of September 24 and informed her about the alleged harassment she was facing at her marital home. Her husband later contacted her parental family over the phone. When the family was unable to get in touch with Vaishnavi, they travelled to the city, where they were informed that she had died at her residence. A case was registered against her father, Ghisare and his parents.
