When Indira Gandhi lost the 1977 general election, it was her ability to keep an eye on the Opposition and maintain real-time awareness of her opponents’ political moves that helped her make a series of decisions to strengthen her ground, eventually leading to her return to power in the 1980 Lok Sabha elections.

Forty-six years later, there is again what party insiders call a game of information that Indira’s grandson, Rahul Gandhi, is manoeuvring. Apart from gathering crucial information, the party has also consciously plugged information leaks from within its ranks. According to party insiders, while it was reforming its organisation and filling organisational gaps, the party was also making key decisions leak-proof.

For instance, when student protests were underway at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, Rahul Gandhi pulled a move out of the blue. After gathering Congress parliamentarians at Mallikarjun Kharge’s official residence at 10 Rajaji Marg for a crucial strategy meeting, he led them in a surprise protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence on July 21, 2026.

The strategy had been planned earlier but was not widely shared among leaders. According to people in the party, the decision was closely guarded within the Gandhi family, among a few members of Rahul Gandhi’s team and, at most, by Mallikarjun Kharge. This kept the information secure and caught the government off guard. It was because of this that the government had to send Union Minister Jitendra Singh and Home Secretary Govind Mohan to negotiate with Rahul.

Rahul Gandhi has himself repeatedly publicly said that he is receiving information from institutions that the BJP is trying to run at its whims. He also mentioned at one of his press conferences how he gets information from the Election Commission of India, which has enabled him to establish what he calls the scale of “vote theft”.

Such manoeuvres, and Rahul Gandhi’s protests in particular, according to party leaders, have energised Congress leaders. Party insiders suggest that this is also having a growing impact on district committees, where party workers have started to feel that the Congress is reclaiming itself.
