The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is examining CCTV footage from the IIT Bombay examination hall as part of its investigation into the death of a 22-year-old BTech student that sparked a wave of protests on the campus.

Sahil Ravindra Wakode, a second-year student, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Friday evening, hours after he was allegedly caught using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination.

According to Crime Branch officials, the footage has not been released or shown to anyone and is currently being examined by the investigating team.

An officer told ANI that the footage shows Wakode’s movements inside the examination hall between 12:30 pm and 12:45 pm September 18.

With about 15 minutes remaining in the test, he is seen bending down and looking at something in his pocket. A professor subsequently questioned him and took him aside, away from the other students.

Investigators are examining additional CCTV footage from across the campus to establish Wakode’s movements after he left the examination hall. 

"After leaving the examination hall, Sahil moved across the campus. He reached his hostel room at approximately 1:25 PM. He did not step out of the room thereafter," the Crime Branch official was quoted as saying by the news agency.

Wakode’s death has since triggered protests on the IIT Bombay campus. His parents have alleged institutional harassment and caste-based discrimination, while protesting students have raised concerns over what they describe as intense academic pressure and alleged threats of suspension.

Student organisers have stressed that their demonstrations are not intended to justify academic misconduct. Instead, they are calling for institutional reforms and a broader examination of the academic and administrative environment at the institute.
