One of the accused in the murder of Punjab Police ASI Harjit Singh was killed in an encounter late at night in Amritsar, officials confirmed on Sunday.

His accomplice, however, managed to escape as it was dark, according to Commissioner Harmanveer Singh Gill, who spoke to the media.

ASI Harjit Singh was killed while on duty on September 18. A high alert was issued in the city, and police increased toll checking to nab the accused.

Police said CCTV footage, technical inputs, tower-dump analysis, local intelligence and human sources.

Police received specific information that the suspects were moving in the area and could be looking for another target.

The suspects were spotted on a scooter to stop at a police checkpoint at around 9:45 pm.

One of the them allegedly opened fire at the cops and fled to the next checkpoint. They then allegedly fired four rounds at the police. Police retaliated in self-defence.

Deepak Singh sustained firearm injuries during the exchange of fire. He was moved to a hospital where he succumbed to injuries, police said. Singh was a resident of Mulechak village in Amritsar. 

The second suspect managed to flee in the vehicle; police said they were making an effort to nab him.

Police also recovered one pistol, two magazines and eight cartridges, officials added.

Harjit Singh was shot at 12:30 am on September 18 after a gunman allegedly followed Simon on a two-wheeler and fired at the back of his neck. He died during treatment.
