Rajasthan's urban local body elections have yielded a complex picture for the BJP, with the party securing 4179 wards but facing a need for introspection due to mixed results in municipal corporations. A significant factor influencing the outcome was the increase in wards post-delimitation, which altered the electoral landscape considerably. While the BJP saw a modest seat increase, the Congress demonstrated strength in key corporations, and the considerable success of independent candidates in areas like Bharatpur presents a clear warning sign for the ruling government. Issues such as inflation, unemployment, and law and order continue to be major concerns for voters, impacting the perceived popularity of the incumbent government and suggesting that these local polls are not entirely a straightforward endorsement ahead of future assembly elections.

The BJP has been portraying its resounding win in Rajasthan's urban local body elections on Monday, winning 4179 wards, as a stamp of approval for the Bhajan Lal Sharma government, but this could still be far from the truth.

Though the BJP has a clear majority, winning 41 per cent of total wards, the mixed results of 10 municipal corporations have given the ruling party a message to introspect.

The Rajasthan municipal elections were held in 10,167 wards across 309 bodies, including 10 municipal corporations, 47 municipal councils, and over 200 municipalities. While the BJP won 4,179 wards, the Congress won 3,613, while independent candidates won 2,273 wards.

Despite BJP’s claims, part of the win can be attributed to the increase in seats after delimitation. After delimitation, 2,770 new wards were added, thus changing the municipal body map. The total number of wards increased by a massive 37.1%. While there were 7,474 wards in the previous municipal elections, the number of wards this time exceeded 10,000.

The BJP's seats increased by five per cent compared to the previous municipal elections, while the Congress's seats declined by five per cent compared to the previous elections.

AAP, CPI (M) and Hanuman Beniwal's Rashtriya Loktantrik Party also benefited. Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal's Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) won 14 seats last time, but this time it won 63 wards, a 350% increase. The CPI(M) won eight wards in the previous election, but this time it won 38 wards, a 375 per cent increase. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won 24 wards in the previous election, but this time its number of wards dropped to 19, a 20.8% drop in its victory count.

This means that while the BJP certainly appears to be the largest party in this game of numbers, its opponents appear to be winning more seats than the BJP in the 10 municipal corporations.

The BJP controlled or gained a strong position in five municipal corporations; Congress emerged as the largest party in three. The BJP won a majority in Udaipur, Bhilwara, and Kota. It also led in Jaipur. However, in Bikaner, Congress returned with a clear majority after 10 years. Congress also emerged as the largest party in Ajmer and Pali. In Jodhpur, the two major parties were neck and neck. Independents dominated in Bharatpur.

The dominance of Independents in Bharatpur, the Chief Minister's home constituency, is a major warning sign for the ruling party. These results indicate a decline in the BJP government's popularity. Inflation, unemployment, law and order, and complaints about local civic amenities continue to influence voters. Clearly, such results are not normal for the ruling party. Incumbency always has an advantage in local body elections.

The Congress's landslide victory in Jhalawar, the stronghold of former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, testifies to this. The BJP also suffered setbacks in areas like Pali. The defeats in the home wards of Ashok Gehlot and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat raise questions about the party's grassroots presence.

The local body elections are often considered the semi-finals of the upcoming assembly elections, and for the same resons, the results cannot be considered entirely satisfactory for the BJP ahead of the 2028 Rajasthan Assembly elections.
