In a major push ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that the BJP-led NDA governments in 21 states would implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by 2029. A UCC is a common set of personal laws on matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, irrespective of religious differences.

Shah was speaking at a press conference on the 'Seva Sankalp Abhiyan' in Mumbai, which is the BJP's bid to highlight the achievements of the NDA government over the last 12 years and the saffron party's 25-year journey under PM Modi's leadership.

"Triple talaq has been abolished, giving Muslim women equal rights. We have introduced the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in several states and I am confident that in the 21 BJP-NDA ruled states, we will introduce the UCC before 2029," Shah said, as per a PTI report.

As of now, the NDA is in power in 19 states and two Union Territories (UTs), including Delhi, West Bengal, Assam, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Out of these, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam have already implemented the UCC, while Madhya Pradesh has set up a committee to draft the UCC.

The Home Minister went on to speak of the ruling alliance's other achievements, saying that these reflected the Centre's India First stance based on performance-based politics, as compared to the politics of corruption, casteism and dynasticism before 2014.

He lauded the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the revocation of Article 370, and said that the repeal of the Triple Talaq law provided justice to Muslim women, while Naxalism had been eradicated from vulnerable areas.

On the topic of the justice system, he claimed that several states had recorded a 30 per cent increase in the conviction rate in a single year since the strengthening of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He also explained that a system was being established to ensure justice could be delivered within three years.

When asked about the recent student protests, especially the ones at Jantar Mantar by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) that led to the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, he declared that India was a democracy, and it was essential to express views on various issues.

He also took the opportunity to take potshots at the Congress, saying that "we cannot govern by imposing an Emergency".

“That is the Congress culture, not ours. We believe in dialogue and discussion," he added.

On national security, Shah said the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A had been achieved without a single drop of blood being shed or a bullet being fired, asserting that Kashmir was fully integrated with India.

He also addressed the Centre's efforts that led to the end of Naxalism after five decades and added that Northeast India was on the path to development, after more than 14 peace agreements were signed here.

He also said that Operation Sindoor had established a policy of "zero tolerance" towards terrorism, which was prioritised across various sectors.
