Key regions like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are particularly vulnerable due to a low-pressure system, raising concerns about potential landslides in hilly areas such as Himachal Pradesh and a rapid increase in river water levels across affected states. While eastern, northeastern, and western India anticipate widespread downpours, the southern parts of the country are expected to experience relatively subdued rainfall activity with only isolated showers predicted.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a dire  warning of heavy rains in 15 states, including eastern parts of Uttar  Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. These areas may experience strong downpour, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.

The low-pressure area over southwest Uttar Pradesh and surrounding areas is likely to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh. “Subdued rainfall activity likely to continue over Peninsular India during the next six to seven days,” the IMD said.

Additionally, thunderstorms are also likely at many places in western and central India, as well as in the northeastern and eastern states.

Bihar, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir will witness heavy rain. Strong winds will blow at 70 kmph, with a risk of landslides in the hilly states, including Himachal Pradesh. The water level of rivers is rising rapidly in many states, the IMD alert stated.

Light showers in Delhi

However, for the national capital, the weather department has forecast a cloudy sky with moderate rain on Monday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to settle around 34 and 24 degrees Celsius, the IMD stated. Besides Delhi, the IMD has excluded Haryana and Chandigarh from the heavy rain warning list.

Eastern, North Eastern India

In eastern India, widespread rainfall is expected in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, West Bengal, and Sikkim until September 12. Widespread rainfall is likely in the Gangetic West Bengal region from September 7 to 10, Jharkhand from September 8 to 11, Bihar from September 7, and Odisha from September 10 to 12.

Rainfall will continue to affect Northeast India next week. Widespread rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh from September 7th to 12th, while widespread rainfall is expected in Assam and Meghalaya on September 8th and 11th-12th. Rainfall is likely at many places in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until September 12th.

West, Southern India

In western India, widespread rainfall is expected in Konkan and Goa until September 12th. Gujarat, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Saurashtra-Kutch may experience scattered to isolated rainfall during this period.

However, the overall rainfall activity is expected to remain relatively weak in South India over the next week. However, isolated rain is possible in coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Kerala, Rayalaseema, and adjoining areas. Heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, while coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may experience heavy rainfall on September 11-12. Strong winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Telangana. Thunderstorms with strong winds are also likely in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on September 7th.
