An IndiGo flight travelling from Doha to Bengaluru was diverted to Muscat on Thursday after one of its pilots reportedly felt unwell during the journey. The aircraft had to declare a Mayday emergency.

IndiGo released a statement, clarifying the flight’s routing to Muscat as an “urgent requirement of medical attention for one of the operating crew members.”

The A320neo flight, 6E 1302, was delayed and took off an hour behind schedule at 3 am. Within the span of the next two hours, the Bengaluru-bound flight changed its destination and turned to Muscat.

Once the flight landed, a medical team attended to the crew member. Indigo’s statement said the crew member is “feeling better now.” An alternative flight has been arranged with a new crew for the passenger to continue the journey to Bengaluru.

Passengers on board the diverted flight are reportedly waiting in Muscat for their journey back to Bengaluru. Refreshments and timely updates are being provided to the passengers while arrangements are made for the replacement aircraft.

The airline apologised for the inconvenience caused by the diversion and said it was making efforts to minimise the disruption to passengers.

“The safety of our customers, crew, and aircraft remains our top priority at IndiGo,” the airline said.

According to TOI, pilot incapacitation is treated as a serious in-flight emergency.

Aircraft like the Airbus A320 are generally operated by two pilots to avoid such situations. Hence, if one pilot becomes incapacitated, the other can continue to fly.

However, controlling the entire flight single-handedly while managing duties performed by another individual is difficult.

The incident comes a day after the IndiGo flight 6E 2102, flying from Goa to Delhi, made an emergency landing at the Manohar International Airport on Tuesday. The flight reported an engine malfunction and had to be diverted within five minutes of taking off. IndiGo said the pilots followed standard operating procedure, informed authorities and landed the aircraft safely.
