CJP calls off September 5 protests after Centre drops cases against protesters

The Cockroach Janta Party announced that it is withdrawing its call for a march on September 5 after the Centre assured that families of NEET aspirants would be compensated and FIRs against protesters would be closed on Tuesday.

CJP spokesperson Saurav Das told the Supreme Court that the activist group looks forward to compliance with the top court's order,

“As co-convener of the CJP, I want to state that in view of the positive assurances of the Government of India and the judicial sanctity bestowed upon them today, and in view of the order being passed by this Court, the CJP deems it appropriate to withdraw the call for the march on September 5 and looks forward to compliance with today's order,” Das told the court.

The group had announced a peaceful protest from India Gate to Delhi police headquarters on September 5 over the government's failure to honour its July 25 commitment.

Two of the group’s demands had not been met.

During the hearing on Tuesday, the centre said that it would honour the assurances.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the centre, told the court that about 13 FIRs registered against protesters between July 20 and 25 would also not be pursued.

The second assurance was that no fresh FIRs would be registered in connection with the matter.

The bereaved families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide will be compensated within three months.

“As of now, we are committed to fulfilling all three assurances,” Mehta said.

The Centre’s assurance comes a day after the Supreme Court declined to interfere with the September 5 march.

Earlier, the States of Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Assam also approached the Supreme Court seeking quashing of 116 FIRs registered in connection with student protests held in July.
