Veteran social activist Anna Hazare was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Bombay Hospital in Mumbai after showing symptoms of a severe viral infection and dehydration.
The 89-year-old, who had already been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Maharashtra's Ralegan Siddhi, was brought to Mumbai after his health declined further.
He is currently stable and is being monitored in the ICU by a team of doctors led by Dr Gautam Bhansali, who have yet to announce if further treatment is needed, based on whether his health improves in the ICU.
For decades, Hazare has actively campaigned for rural development, water conservation, and fighting corruption.
He is famed for transforming the once backward Ralegan Siddhi into a model village. His campaign model for the same, based on watershed development, collective labour, and social discipline, earned him national recognition in 2011 when he led the 'India Against Corruption' movement and its hunger strikes.
This movement, demanding a Jan Lokpal law, spread to several cities across the country and is considered an important turning point in India's political history. Prior to that, he had been leading a long-standing movement against corruption and government irregularities in Maharashtra.
These hunger strikes were also a key feature of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests weeks ago, at which time he came out in support of the satirical outfit that turned into a government pressure group. Hazare had also condemned the alleged police violence against the protestors during their Parliament march rally at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on July 20.
He had also written a letter to PM Narendra Modi, urging the government to engage in dialogue with protesting students and address their concerns.
