32-year-old Anila, the prime accused in the murder of two Malayali women living in California, was reportedly in severe depression. The victims, identified as 40-year-old Ann Mary from Thiruvananthapuram and 35-year-old Anjana Hari from Thrissur, were allegedly killed by their friend who lived in the same apartment complex.
Malayalam media reports indicate that Anila is a Kottayam native and from an affluent family. She is reportedly an engineering graduate from the Bharananganam ARS College in the Kottayam district. In 2022, Anila left for the US and joined a leading private company.
Anila’s parents have been staying in the US with her for the past two months, along with her husband and child. According to Malayalam media reports, Anila lost her job recently and has been dealing with mental health problems.
A family friend of Ann Mary also said that the suspect had issues with her over a job-related matter.
The three women lived with their families in the Mill Creek Apartments on Dixon Landing Road. They were friends and had even attended an Onam Celebration together.
Around noon on Friday, Anila allegedly called Anjana and asked her to meet outside their apartment building. Shortly afterwards, she was allegedly struck by a car driven by the suspect, knocking her down and killing her on the spot. The vehicle was later found severely damaged in the parking lot of a nearby building.
Anjana’s husband, Vijeesh, recognised the blue SUV as Anila’s as the vehicle sped through after killing the woman. He immediately informed Ann’s husband, Jacob, of the incident.
Jacob, who was unable to get Ann Mary on the phone, reached the apartment and found her dead with stab wounds. A knife was also recovered from beside her body.
While reports indicate that the suspect was mentally unwell, the exact motive behind the murder is still being investigated.
Ann Mary was a software engineer and had been living in the US for around 10 years. She was married to Kottayam native Jacob and had two children, aged 12 and five. Anjana was a school teacher and moved to the US in 2021 with her husband and their six-year-old daughter.
Arrangements are underway to bring the victims’ bodies back to India. However, as the investigation is ongoing, it cannot be confirmed when the remains will be handed over to the relatives in the US.
