Educationist and activist Sonam Wangchuk says he believes the founders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) have political ambitions, while stressing that there is 'nothing wrong' with young leaders eventually entering politics.
In a podcast with Prakhar Gupta, Wangchuk spoke about his association with CJP founders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka during the student-led protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
Responding to questions about whether the CJP founders could eventually enter electoral politics, Wangchuk said his assessment was that they did have political ambitions. However, he clarified that the founders had never directly told him this was their intention. He also added that political ambition should not automatically be viewed negatively.
‘They are not saints’
Describing the CJP founders as “not saints”, Wangchuk said it was natural for young people involved in public movements to have political aspirations.
"As far as their political ambitions are concerned, I think they do have political ambitions. I have assessed them quite closely, and I believe they certainly have political ambitions. And perhaps there is nothing wrong with that either. They did not tell me that they have political ambitions. This is my assessment of them. They are not saints who do not want anything out of this. I am sure there are political ambitions, and there is nothing wrong with that," he mentioned.
Advising the founders, Wangchuk said he asked them to maintain the sanctity of the platform, keep it neutral, apolitical and a pressure group, because in that way they would be able to achieve much more.
