Seasoned Malayalam actor Devan may become the Kerala state unit chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a news report said. Devan, who recently quit the BJP, will reach Chennai after September 10 to meet TVK chief Vijay, the report added.
Devan told Manorama Online that the meeting had been delayed because the Assembly session is scheduled to continue until September 8. The final decision and official announcement will be made after the meeting. He also said that he and Vijay share a close personal relationship, having acted together in six films, the Malayalam report added. Devan added that he would take a final decision after meeting Vijay.
The initial discussions have, however, been completed following the arrival of two TVK leaders at Devan's residence on Friday. They also ensured that Devan talked to the senior party leadership virtually, the report added.
TVK is planning to establish party units in all the southern states. Thus, the party has been in communication with sources in Kerala for the past month. It was during this period that Devan quit the BJP.
While he was not reachable to the TVK leaders who tried to contact him initially, actor Priyanka helped them arrange a meeting with Devan, Manorama Online said. Priyanka was also present when the delegation met Devan at his residence later.
TVK sources say that the party had also planned to bring Devan into its fold while he was with the BJP, but discussions were not held because he was then part of another party. According to Devan, his resignation from the BJP, amidst mediation efforts by Thrissur MP Suresh Gopi, had nothing to do with his decision to join TVK.
