A West Bengal court on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra for allegedly failing to appear for a hearing in a hate speech case.
The complaint that led to the court case, filed in the Krishnanagar District Court, alleged that her comments after the Nadia protests of 2025—about infiltration along the India-Bangladesh border—were capable of inciting violence and hurting religious sentiments.
In that regard, the lower court had issued a summons for the case hearing on Wednesday, after which her lawyer conveyed to the court that she would not be able to show up for it.
The lawyer had also expressed apprehension to the judge, saying that Moitra might be heckled outside the court premises if she were to appear for the case.
The court then issued an arrest warrant in her name under Section 79 (outrage to the dignity of women), Section 196 (inciting enmity between groups), Section 299 (hurting religious feelings), Section 351 (criminal intimidation), and Section 353(2) (hate speech).
Notably, this warrant was issued because she failed to appear for her hate speech case hearings multiple times, a Sangbad Pratidin report said, citing court sources.
The report added that despite receiving summonses and not appearing, the Krishnanagar District Court had fixed her hearing date to August 12, which she deferred, after which she was given the chance to appear on Wednesday, which she did not.
Back in 2025, after protests in the Nadia district, she had made a sardonic comment on the protesters who had hurled eggs and stones at her.
"Instead of throwing eggs like this, throw eggs while wearing a burqa. Then no one will see you. Then there will be no complaint against you," she had said at the time, which led to a case being filed at the Hogalberia Police Station in Nadia.
Now, the Krishnanagar court has also directed that a report on the execution of the arrest warrant against Moitra be submitted on August 28.
