JKLM leader Devendra Nath Mahto was hospitalised on Monday after his health condition worsened. He was on a nine-day hunger strike over alleged Jharkhand recruitment exam irregularities.
On Monday, he took part in a march by protesting students. Mahto's aide Pankaj Kumar alleged that he was injured during the lathi-charge by police near the Jharkhand legislative assembly.
Doctors said his health condition was critical after a drastic dip in blood sugar level.
"He is being treated in the emergency ward," Ranchi Sadar Hospital medical officer Nancy Priya told PTI.
Several protesting students breached the barricades near the assembly. In response, police resorted to water cannons, tear gas and lathi-charge. Many protesters and four police personnel were injured during the clash.
The protesters have being seeking reforms in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). They have also been demanding cancellation of recruitment exams and an independent investigation by the CBI or judicial panel.
The BJP on Monday evening for Jharkhand bandh on Aug 11 over police lathi-charge on students protesting against recruitment exam 'irregularities'.
"It will be a state-wide bandh. All essential services, however, are excluded from the purview of the shutdown," said BJP state president Aditya Sahu.
