US Vice President J.D. Vance called Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday to discuss ways to further deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across key areas.

During the conversation, Modi congratulated Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance on the birth of their son.

“Received a phone call from US Vice President JD Vance. We discussed ways to further deepen India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across key areas,” Modi said in a post on social media.

“Warmly congratulated him and the Second Lady on the birth of their son and conveyed best wishes to the entire family,” he added.

The conversation between the two leaders comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia, with Iran refusing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil markets and raising concerns over inflation in several countries.

Earlier in the day, Vance said Washington was working to establish a route that would allow commercial ships to safely pass through the waterway, while continuing to pressure Iran amid the escalating regional tensions.

It was not immediately known whether Modi and Vance discussed the proposed India-US trade deal. Modi and US President Donald Trump, during their meeting in France in June, had instructed officials from both countries to work towards an early agreement that would be balanced, mutually beneficial and commercially meaningful.

India-US relations suffered a major downturn last year after Trump imposed punitive tariffs on Indian imports over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil, as well as his repeated assertions that he had sought to mediate between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.

However, ties have improved over the past few months, with both sides making progress towards finalising a trade agreement.
