Friday saw the national capital lashed by heavy rain, with streets getting flooded, trees falling and traffic disrupted across the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in Delhi as the rain continued to pour through the day. The IMD said Delhi recorded its rainiest day of August so far this year during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Friday.
Station-wise data showed that Safdarjung received 59.2 mm of rainfall, Lodhi Road 60.4 mm, Ridge 57.0 mm, Ayanagar 26.2 mm and Palam 16.9 mm.
Updated data till 5 pm showed Sector 17 in Faridabad leading in NCR region with 119.4 mm rainfall since midnight, according to weatherman Navdeep Dahiya.
Overflowing drains and submerged potholes have reportedly led to accidents. Potholes get submerged and sewer pits cannot be seen. At least three or four vehicles have overturned today, including e-rickshaws, scooters and motorcycles," an e-rickshaw driver said.
In Noida, an ambulance was reportedly stuck in a waterlogged underpass for over half an hour near Mahamaya Flyover. "We have not received any help so far. The ambulance is not carrying any patients," said ambulance driver Vijay Srivastava.
At least nine houses collapsed and 16 trees fell since Thursday night, according to the Delhi Fire Service. Three women who were trapped inside a house after a tree fell on the building were safely rescued.
Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, ITO, Wazirabad Road, Patel Road, Rohtak Road, Shankar Road, the Kirti Nagar stretch, the Delhi-Jaipur Highway, Peeragarhi and Shaheen Bagh were among areas that saw heavy traffic. East Delhi areas like GTB Enclave, Dilshad Garden and GT Road also witnessed traffic snarls.
Weathermen predict that the rain in Delhi might weaken on Saturday, with moderate showers and generally cloudy skies expected. IMD forecast generally cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle on Sunday. Similar conditions are expected from August 10 to 13.
Other states where intense downpour is predicted include Odisha, where very heavy rainfall is likely, and Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka, where heavy rain is expected.
