A 32-year-old man, Mohammad Emroz, was beaten to death on Tuesday in the Chatra district of Jharkhand over allegations of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a sixth-grade girl. His father, Sultan Mian, has filed a police complaint, and an FIR has been registered.

According to villagers, the sixth-grade student suddenly went missing on Sunday night in Badgaon. Her family allegedly searched for her extensively. They even questioned the lynched man’s family, who lived across their house. However, they could not get any information.

The minor allegedly returned home around 2:00 am on Tuesday and informed her family about the entire incident. She said that she was held captive for two days during which she was sexually assaulted. She also alleged that she was threatened with death if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

Following this, villagers stormed into the Emroz’s house. According to his father’s complaint, a crowd of 100 to 150 people reached their place and accused them of keeping a girl at their residence. People allegedly tied up both parents and beat them. The FIR explains that the man was attacked by the mob as he tried to rescue his parents. 56 people have been named in the FIR. The man also alleged that a police personnel was present in the crowd. 

Villagers alleged that Emroz attempted to escape before they caught him.

Police immediately arrived at the scene and admitted the injured youth to the hospital. After receiving first aid, he was referred to Hazaribagh for better treatment. However, he died while undergoing treatment.

Sub-divisional Police Officer Prabhat Ranjan Barwar said the minor girl complained of sexual assault during the interrogation. The student is undergoing a medical examination. Legal action under the POSCO Act and other relevant sections are being taken according to her statements.

Emroz’s lynching is being investigated separately as the man’s death was caused by mob violence. The police have detained more than half a dozen people and begun questioning them.

A heavy police force has been deployed in the area to prevent further tension and to maintain law and order. Officials have urged the villagers not to take the law into their hands, adding that the allegations are yet to be confirmed.
