Security has been stepped up outside DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin's residence in Neelankarai, Chennai, and at several DMK offices after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) announced statewide protests over his alleged remarks about actor Trisha.

TVK has called for demonstrations across Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, alleging that Udhayanidhi made an inappropriate double entendre referring to the actor during a speech.

The controversy stems from a farmers' protest rally in Thanjavur, where Udhayanidhi allegedly made a derogatory remark after sections of the crowd chanted Trisha's name. The comments triggered widespread criticism, prompting TVK to accuse the DMK leader of insulting women and lowering the standards of political discourse.

Police have taken Udhayanidhi into custody for questioning in connection with the alleged remarks.

The ruling TVK has filed a complaint with the Thanjavur East Police Station and has also approached the National Commission for Women (NCW), seeking action against Udhayanidhi.

TVK MLA Rhevanth Charan described the remarks as "absolutely disgusting," alleging that they reflected the "mindset and declining standards of the Arivalayam clan."

In its police complaint, TVK alleged that Udhayanidhi and members of the DMK's IT wing deliberately demeaned women and caused mental distress to actor Trisha and women at large. The party also claimed that a 2-minute-39-second video of the speech was intentionally circulated on the social media platform X to provoke public unrest.

The party has urged the NCW to issue a notice to Udhayanidhi, seek an explanation, and direct him to issue an unconditional public apology.

Meanwhile, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko also condemned the remarks, calling them "cheap and derogatory."

"The speech delivered by Udhayanidhi Stalin at the DMK's protest in Thanjavur, in which he crossed the limits of political decorum while criticising Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, deserves strong condemnation," Vaiko said in a statement.

He added that the use of such language was unbecoming of a leader holding a high public office.

BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan also criticised Udhayanidhi, describing his speech as "vulgar" and "laced with double entendres."

"It is precisely this uncivilised and irresponsible style of politics that led the people to remove the DMK from power. Even after that, the party has shown no signs of reform," she said.
