Former Chief Minister and DMK chief M K Stalin has convened an emergency meeting at the party’s headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai to discuss the arrest of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Opposition Leader and DMK Youth Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin by the Thanjavur police. Udhayanidhi was  arrested for his alleged "double-meaning" remarks alluding to popular actor Trisha and insulting her modesty.

After the news about the arrest broke, Stalin rushed to Anna Arivalayam with senior executives including Duraimurugan, R.S. Bharathi and lawyers from the party's legal wing to discuss the next steps. The DMK leadership is seriously considering legal and political countermeasures to counter this drastic move.  

While the DMK has already organised street protests and road blockades across Tamil Nadu to condemn the arrest of Udhayanidhi, the legal wing of the party is already gearing up to file a bail petition in the Madras High Court.

Amid this, DMK senior leaders have already termed the arrest as a tactic by the TVK and Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to prevent Udhayanidhi from participating in the assembly session that will begins on Wednesday.

a statement issued by DMK General Secretary Duraimurugan, he said, "I strongly condemn the cowardly government that has sent the police to arrest the Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin in the House, just as the Budget Session is about to begin."

The government, which remained silent about the demands raised by the association for farmers in Thanjavur yesterday, has trembled at the rise of that protest and has arrested the opposition leader, an important pillar of democracy, on a baseless false case. This is the height of anarchy. The worst democratic assassination.

DMK MP Kanimozhi also took the same stance, accusing Vijay of ignoring democratic procedures. "If the government has a personal allegation or intention to take revenge on Udhayanidhi Stalin, it can file a case as per the law and take it to court. Let the judiciary conduct a proper investigation in that case and give a verdict as per the law."

“Ignoring democratic procedures and using arrest as the primary weapon is unacceptable. The government is resorting to such repressive measures only when it is politically unable to confront the DMK. Trying to suppress the voice of the opposition party by using force of power, unable to respond to opinions with opinions, is an anti-democratic approach,” she posted on X.
