Passengers who sustained injuries aboard a Phuket-Delhi Air India due to severe turbulence on Tuesday recalled the ordeal they went through during the flight. One of the fliers revealed that a one-and-a-half-year-old baby was thrown three seats away while several other passengers hit the ceiling and floor multiple times.

The turbulence struck without a warning and flight AI 2379 plunged nearly 300 feet within seconds, according to reports. At least 11 passengers and four crew members were among those who got injured.

One of the passengers said the flight from Phuket suddenly rolled sharply. "Some people hit the ceiling and then fell to the floor multiple times. Luggage fell on passengers’ heads," said the passenger. "One baby, around one to one-and-a-half years old, was thrown about three seats away. After this experience, I will be scared to travel by flight again."

A traveller who hurt his back said they were sleeping as it was an early morning flight. "...The flight suddenly stopped before taking a turn. It kept turning like this for 2-3 minutes. Around 15 to 20 passengers were injured in the incident. A baby was also hurt," he said.

He added that there were more than 100 passengers on board and that they will take action against Air India.

Yet another passenger recalled that the aircraft suddenly dropped altitude and many fliers hit their heads against the overhead bins. "The plane suddenly went very low, due to which passengers hit their heads on the overhead area," the passenger said.

Viviana, an Italian woman who was flying with her family, recalled that her mother and sister were injured. "I saw my sister thrown up into the air from her seat. My mother hit her head, and my phone fell off," she said, recalling the ordeal.

"People sitting behind me suffered injuries. A male passenger had blood on his face. We thought we would die. It was really scary. I was shaking and crying. It was horrible. I cannot hear well even now," added Viviana.

According to DGCA, one of the cabin crew member was severely injured. "Pilot In Command reported a severe injury to one cabin crew member, injury to another and minor injuries to a few passengers due to a sudden loss of approximately 300 feet altitude," a senior DGCA official told PTI.
