A man with alleged links to the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist group was arrested from West Bengal's Burdwan, reports claimed. The man, identified as Hamid Mondal, was living in the state for many years and is said to be a part of Jaish's Hamil Sajjad Bhat unit, which is reportedly tasked with killings and other terrorist activities.
It was the Burdwan Police and the Special Task Force (STF) that reportedly conducted an operation at around 8.30 am on Thursday and arrested the terrorist from Renaissance Housing.
Local media reports have claimed that sleuths found confidential information about the movement of statesmen, particularly those of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, in his possession. This included details about the vehicle the chief minister regularly used, its parking spots, his routine use of the vehicle — including when he would get into it — and how far it would travel. Mondal was also tracking details of the CM's driver, a news report said.
According to intelligence sources, Hamid Mondal was a resident of Pilkhana in Howrah and worked at a vest manufacturing unit, said TV9 Bangla. He relocated to Burdwan with his wife, two sons, and a daughter only a couple of months back. While the neighbours claimed the woman and children were no strangers, Hamid was hardly seen by them at the rented accommodation.
The report added that the probe team believe he received training in Pakistan and was in regular contact with Pakistan's intelligence agency, the ISI. Investigators have reportedly uncovered some explosive information, but are not willing to disclose details at this stage, TV9 Bangla added.
Suvendu Adhikari is West Bengal's first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister, who took office on May 9, 2026. The BJP won 207 seats in the assembly election, ending 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule. Adhikari, himself a former Trinamool icon, secured his position after defeating Mamata Banerjee in the Bhabanipur constituency.
