Lok Sabha Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday refused to apologise for claiming in the Parliament that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had authorised the use of force against student protesters.
He was speaking to the media at the Congress headquarters just hours after his allegations triggered a row in the Lok Sabha during the anti-paper leak bill debate.
“The Home Minister is scared; he authorised the shooting of our students. He put pellets into the blood of our students; he ordered the students of India to be shot," he said, referring to the violent crackdown by the police on Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protesters during their march to Parliament on July 20 against the NEET paper leak issue.
The remarks caused a furore in the Parliament, with the NDA MPs asking him to prove his claims. Even Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla intervened, saying that no allegations could be made in the House without proper evidence.
"I was not allowed to speak. Multiple times Rajnath Singh and Kiren Rijiju were allowed to speak. I was given an assurance that if I apologised, I would be allowed to continue. I will never ever apologise to the BJP or the RSS," he said at the presser.
Urging PM Modi to "sack Amit Shah", he further added that a Supreme Court monitored probe should be launched to investigate police brutality against student protesters on July 20.
Pointing to a picture of Shah on the screen, Gandhi told students: "This is the man who beat you, thrashed you, humiliated you and shot you with pellet guns."
He also pointed out that if Shah had ordered the police crackdown, he was "culpable" and if he did not know about it, then he was "incompetent", adding that victims of pellet gun firing, lathi charges, and tear gassing at the CJP-led protests would get justice, because either way, the Home Minister would "have to go".
