Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu on Friday resigned from the Council of Ministers raising speculations about the reason behind the move.

Bittu, who was the Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries, resigned because his Rajya Sabha tenure ended on June 21. His resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu.

“The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri Ravneet Singh from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution of India," the statement read.

The resignation ahead of the upcoming Punjab assembly polls has triggered speculations that Bittu might contest in the elections.

Bittu, who switched from Congress to the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, joined the Union Council of Ministers once the Modi-led government took charge for a third term.

The former Union minister is the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, who was assassinated in 1995. He won from Anandpur Sahib in 2009 on Congress ticket. He represented Ludhiana for two terms from 2014 to 2019. After his BJP move, Bittu was fielded against Congress's Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
