A policeman was killed after suspected terrorists opened fire at a police party in Anantnag town of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

The firing took place around 12:30 at the Lal Chowk in Anantnag.

Preliminary reports say that the attack was carried out by terrorists in a vehicle.

Sources said that the police party was on routine patrol in the area when terrorists riding in a vehicle opened fire indiscriminately, targeting the police team.

A head constable was seriously injured in the attack. Aashiq Hussain Qureshi,  who was posted on the Amarnath yatra security duty, was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the Government Medical College at Anantnag.

The cop belonged to the  Beerwah area of central Kashmir's Budgam district. He was posted with the IRP 3rd Battalion of Budgam

Additional security forces were sent to the scene to bring it under control. Teams consisting of the police, CRPF and army have cordoned off a part of Lal Chowk and the surrounding areas.

The possible escape routes for the suspected terrorists have been searched, and an intense search operation in underway.

The Resistance Front, A shadow outfit of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack through a social media post, PTI reported.

The Amarnath Yatra  had already been suspended since July 19 due to the unstable weather in the region. Jammu and Kashmir has been witnessing heavy rains land slide and flash floods in recent days. There has been loss of lives and property in the Poonch and Rajouri districts.
