The deaths of a school teacher and his two kids after their car fell into the Godavari River in Maharashtra on Friday has left the Nanded district shaken.

The police have suspected the drowning deaths to be a case of suicide, a PTI report said, citing officials.

The deceased have been identified as 42-year-old Sunil More, a teacher at the Pota Budruk Zilla Parishad school in Himayatnagar, and his two children—12-year-old Sara and 8-year-old Sumit.

The incident, which took place early on Friday morning, reportedly came after More claimed in a WhatsApp status update that he was being harassed by seniors, and that he planned to kill himself and his two children.

Then, at about 8 AM, he drove his children in a car towards the Amdura-Punegaon road. His wife had been at home at the time.

When the car approached a bridge over the Godavari River, he reportedly turned the car to one side, crashing into the metal railings on the side of the bridge, and breaking through them.

The car then fell into the river, which led to the three of them drowning to their deaths.

After locals alerted the police, a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team stationed in Nanded was rushed to the scene of the tragedy.

After three hours of effort, the team managed to have the car pulled out of the river. Subsequently, the bodies of the teacher and his children were recovered from the vehicle, the official added.

The police said that bodies have been sent for postmortem, while a probe has been launched to verify More's claims of being harassed by seniors.
